Daily Life

The flock gets let out, the garden gets checked, Kairo gets his walk. Most days here look small from the outside and take up the whole day from the inside.

The Flock

Fourteen hens, all named at some point and now mostly answering to nothing. Letting them out is the first job of the day, before coffee, before anything else gets decided.

They tell you a lot about the season if you’re paying attention: laying slows before a storm, they crowd the coop before the first hard frost.

The Garden

Beds get reworked every year, and none of them ever quite match the plan drawn up in January. By August it’s mostly tomatoes, beans, and whatever squash took over.

Seeds get saved from the strongest plants each season, so the garden is slowly becoming its own thing, less store-bought every year.

Dawn Walks With Kairo

Kairo doesn’t walk in a straight line and doesn’t hurry for anything. Following him means noticing what’s actually changed since yesterday: which leaves turned, which bird came back.

It’s the one part of the day with no task attached to it. It’s stayed that way on purpose.

Fiber Arts & Quilting

Piecing, mending, and the quilt frame that’s rarely put away.

Most quilts here start as leftover fabric from something else. Nothing gets thrown away that could still be pieced into a border.
